The Lodève region
Dating back to the 4th century, the medieval town of Lodève is situated in the heart of the Languedoc region, where the Hérault river meanders down to the plains. Sheltered in the most southern hills of the “Massif Central”, the city is the gateway to the Mediterranean plains and beaches to the south.
The nearby Lake of Salagou covers an area of over 2000 acres and is a paradise for fishing, swimming and water sports.
To discover the preserved nature around the lake, over 200 kms of trails are available for hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling. After less than an hours drive you can enjoy the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea.
Here you’ll find ancient villages, abbeys, monasteries, templar sites, churches, caves, canyons, and other exceptional geological formations.
All this amidst a patchwork of vineyards producing quality wines, such as St. Chinian, St. Saturnin, Faugères, etc.
Lodève's museum, the « Musée Fleury », hosts fine arts expositions on an annual basis, such as De Vlaminck (2002), De Chirico (2003) and Van Dongen (2004) and Berthe Morisot (2006).
Furthermore, the museum exhibits its proper collection of sculptures, paintings and archeological objects. The latter are dating back many centuries and were discovered in the Lodève region.
At a distance less than 60 kms, visit Montpellier, the capital of the Hérault, the Roquefort caves and the worlds highest bridge, Le Viaduc de Millau.
The Hérault was elected the most attractive department of France.
From the Mediterranean plains up to the most southern ridges of the “Massif Central” (alt. 800 m), nature exposes itself in all the beauty and variety one can think of.
The influence of mankind dating back many centuries shows itself in well-preserved historical monuments and sites.
